Car won't start after installing EVO-ALL - 2008 G35

+1 vote
Hi guys, I just installed the EVO ALL with T-Harness into a 2008 PTS Infiniti G35. It wouldn't start the car after installation so I reset the unit and reflashed and now the LEDs respond differently (blue flashes on unlock, red and yellow come on then red and blue if i recall). The car won't crank though. Any ideas?

service #001A06 556476

I verified continuity to the brown wire on the start button. I'm at a loss. Thanks!

Bob

**edit**

so i went back and apparently the 08 g35 isn't compatible with the lock lock lock feature but the literature didn't seem entirely clear that it wasn't so in the end I need to install the DSM300 telematics unit, which is fine since I have it sitting here already. The weird thing is that the blue light flashes when I lock the door so clearly the unit sees the door lock get pinged from the CANBUS. Does anyone know why the 3x lock doesn't it work?

Did you enable the 3x lock feature in the bypass settings? It is default off....also make sure OEM remote monitoring is on.

Looking  here (https://fortin.ca/en/features/3x_lock_remote_starter.html#infiniti) says your car is indeed compatible with the 3x lock to start feature from an OEM remote!

I'd bet you have OEM remote monitoring and/or the 3x lock feature disabled....

Nope, I just checked again it's enabled. Good idea though. I'm about to go out and reprogram the key. I did, stupidly, have the wrong wire attached to the push to start button but I fixed that, now the evo goes through a startup sequence and the dash comes on in the car but no crank. Really not sure what's the issue.
Is option D1 and D6 enabled? Have to click "configuration" then "unit options" to see these options.
Yes, I have D1 and D6 enabled. Im wondering if I just don't have a good connection at the PTS button.

**edit**

I lied. D6 not enabled. Let me try now...
Enabled D6 and tried again. No luck :/

Just a follow up. I downgraded my firmware on rev and rerogrammed the key but still no luck. The dash on the car lights up and you can hear relays clicking but the engine just doesn't crank.

**edit** I didn't hook up the door pin sensor but i wouldn't think that matters.

door pin sensor is to turn off your headlights automatically....usually needed.
Right, I plan on hooking it up (although I don't use my lights in automatic) but I just mean for the purposes of starting the car I wouldn't think it matters.
in regards to starting the car, it does not matter.
That's what I figured. Thanks for helping. Hopefully I can resolve this issue shortly. The only non-harness connection is the PTS button and I used a wire tap but verified with a multimeter that I had continuity. This is certainly odd.

So I have a new twist. Swapped the relay connector from RL1 to RL2 and the car started like a champ. However, I cannot shut the car down using the 3x lock. Also, the screen on my stereo doesn't come on now. Thoughts?? Thanks in advance guys!

stereo screen is fine, forgot to flip the valet switch for my backup camera interface. still can't shutdown the car from the remote though

I see another thread on the infiniti sub forum that says it won't shut off for the infiniti and I need an RF kit. Maybe that's the issue? I have a late model g35 which was just before the 2008 g37 came out, which was really a "mid year refresh" type deal so maybe that's why I had to switch relay harnesses.
Make sure you have enabled the brake pedal option under the bypass settings. The starter will not turn "off" until you tap the brake pedal but it can't turn off if brake pedal monitoring is not on which leaves your car stuck on since the starter module remains in control. Common problem....

When the car is remote started and you are inside, tapping the brake should kill the car if you do not press the PTS button. After pressing the starter button, the brake should only kill the starter leaving the car in control of itself again.

Remote start the car, open the door, and instantly hit the brake pedal. If the car does not turn off, that'd be the give away that brake monitoring is not on or a connection is missing(a lot of cars can get the brake signal through the CAN bus but some can't and need to be hard wired).
That's probably it. I definitely don't have that on. Thanks a lot for the support!
Unfortunately I checked and that option was enabled. Perhaps there's something related to the fact that i'm using the RL2 option instead of RL1? I'll have to investigate this a little further I suppose.
RL1 and RL2 is only there to switch which brake wire is powered at the brake switch. 3xlock start is not listed as a compatible feature for this car because i believe the oem remote cannot be monitored by the evo on the vehicles can-bus while the engine is running. You can actually know if the evo detects the oem remotes by looking at the blue led on the EVO, it will flash 1 time per lock press if the remote is detected. In the case that the oem remote is in fact detected by the evo while the engine is running, make sure to do all your tests with all the doors closed.

His car  is indeed listed as compatible with 3x lock remote starting via OEM key fob...Look here https://fortin.ca/en/features/3x_lock_remote_starter.html#infiniti.

Bob- I believe you can have the starter kill timer kick in after the door has been opened so that if you do not take control of the car within x amount of seconds after opening a door, the starter will kill the car...but if you were to hop in and take control, then the starter would just give back control to the car after the timer is up so you'd be able to shut the car off as usual. I'm not sure what setting this is off the top of my head(it may be a setting on the starter options of the Evo-One...which you don't have).

See if the Evo-All has a kill timer feature that is triggered by a door opening then set it to enough time for you to hop in and take control. I could swear the Evo-One does...

That said, the Evo should be giving control back to the car after a brake tap...something isn't right their but you could possibly work around it like above.

See if the Evo-All has a kill timer feature that is triggered by a door opening then set it to enough time for you to hop in and take control. I could swear the Evo-One does...

There is an option to shut down the car when you open a door on either evo-all or evo-one. No timer for it though.

Here's a quick explanation of take-over for this vehicles and most push-to-start vehicles.

On push-to-start vehicles, the EVO checks for an unlock command from either of three sources: the oem remote, an aftermarket remote, or the buttons on the doors. If a door is opened without hitting unlock on either of the three above, the vehicle will shut down when a door is opened.

Similarly, if you are already in the car and remote start it, then decide to drive away, the car will shut down as soon as you hit the brake since the module never saw an unlock signal.

If a door is already open when testing the remote starter, takeover will not work. So when you press the brake, the car will shut down.

So, taking the above into consideration, and the fact we cannot detect the oem remote once the vehicle is started, take over control will not work and unfortunately since it seems that original remote does not work while the engine is running, you would not be able to shut down the car.

On a side note. I fixed the issue of having the G35 2008 listed on the 3x Lock Start feature page. We do not want to advertise 3xLock functionality on vehicles that the factory remote does not function while the engine is running, or that we cannot detect the oem remote commands while the engine is running. It wasnt listed on the vehicle page and should not of shown up on the 3xlock start feature page, for some reason it was showing up yet, both those pages source their info from the same database.

Guys thanks for the replies, I wasn't around yesterday or I would have hopped on. I hope I didn't state my problem incorrectly because the starter works from the OEM remote (it did after I switched the relay harnesses, not sure why my G35 required the RL2), my problem is that I cannot shut the car down using the OEM remote. I can get in the car and drive away and shut it off from the PTS button just fine, but the remote won't shut it down. I have verified that the EVO sees the lock commands and gives a blue pulse. So I do agree the car is compatible with 3x lock but there's something else going on that I can't pinpoint. thanks!

I am seriously surpised that the remotes are even monitored on this car. Honestly lol. Nissan-Infiniti 2007-2008 vehicles had no oem remote commands on the data network. Are you sure it's not a 2009? What's the 10th digit starting from the left of the VIN (manufacturing date is not the "real" date although a later 2008 build may have 2009 technology)?

I have some questions though...

  • The blue led flashes once on every lock press while the vehicle is remote started?
  • All doors are closed while the vehicle is remote started and no key is in the car?

And just to confirm, when you are testing this, this is what you doing.

  • All doors are closed, no keys are in the car.
  • Press 3x lock, car starts.
  • wait a few seconds (30 seconds lets say)
  • press 3x lock to shut it down (it doesnt but the blue led is flashing once on every lock press?)

I can get in the car and drive away and shut it off from the PTS button just fine, but the remote won't shut it down.

wait a minute... i just reread this part. You cannot shut down the vehicle by 3x lock after actually driving it. Pressing 3x Lock at this point is actually activating Idle Mode. Idle mode allows people to let the vehicle run if they need to go do a quick store run and want to leave the vehicle running without the key in the car. If this is actually what is happening, ignore everything else written above :D

Hi Robert,

My VIN from the tenth digit is 8M263503 so I'm not sure if that means August 2007 or August 2008. I bought the car used from the dealer. I suspect it was a late model 08 which probably used the G37 wiring since the 08 G35 and 08/09 G37 coexisted for a little while there.

To clarify though, I can't shut down the car from the remote while it sits in my driveway. What I meant was that the PTS button works fine under all circumstances, but if I start it, wait a minute then try to shut it down it won't work. I haven't driven it and tried but that's interesting about idle mode. I'll keep that in mind. Is there a location where all that information is kept? I didn't get any type of instructions like that with the unit. Unless I was oblivious and just didn't realize they're in the box...i'll double check...

Also, sometimes the car dies when I open the door, but I don't have the door pin hooked up. Still trying to figure this one out.

Here are the answers to your other questions:

  • The blue led flashes once on every lock press while the vehicle is remote started? Yes, I confirmed the blue light flashes once.
  • All doors are closed while the vehicle is remote started and no key is in the car? This is correct, I actually only have one smartkey so it's on my person at all times outside the vehicle.

And just to confirm, when you are testing this, this is what you doing.

  • All doors are closed, no keys are in the car. Correct.
  • Press 3x lock, car starts. Correct.
  • wait a few seconds (30 seconds lets say) Correct.
  • press 3x lock to shut it down (it doesnt but the blue led is flashing once on every lock press?) I actually haven't confirmed that the LED flashes once the car is running but I will today.

Happy thanksgiving!

So I confirmed that the blue LED does pulse when the car is running and the doors are locked. I also had an issue where I remote started the car and then opened the door to turn it off and then when I reclosed the door the car started back up on its own. Weird. Any thoughts on that?

Also, I wired the door locks and door pin (although as I figured I had to use the G37 wiring diagrams because my BCM harness didn't match the instructions) and I can't lock or unlock the door using the telematics. Not sure if I need to enable some other options in the evo.

Thanks! - Bob

**edit** - I had to disconnect the door pin connection too. With it installed the car wouldn't let me lock the doors from the OEM remote. It would beep signifying a door is open.
Just saw the edit.

If that output on the EVO is giving out constant ground, this would explain the blown fuse. something shorted during the install and may have damaged that output. Only way to really know is by starting from scratch with the programming.

To start from scratch:

1. Master Reset the EVO-ALL (important): http://wirecolor.com/en/qa/50193/faq-how-do-i-reset-my-evo-all

2. Reporgram to the vehicle

3. Re-enable the options exactly like you have them now: http://fortin.ca/en/support/001a06556476/

4. see if you can freely lock the vehicle or test the output

Note: it is possible the wire on the vehicle is not door trigger (even though it tells you door open when something is connected to it). Please test it with a multimeter or logic test light, by opening and closing the door before connecting anything to it. I am already surprised you are capable of 3xlock start so your specific model is actually a completely different trim level than what we have seen so far, you will to test this wire. The vehicle door trigger wire needs to test as GROUND when the door is open. With the door closed, it will either be 12V or open circuit.
Hi Robert, it's raining here right now but i'll test that when I get a break in the weather later (I do all my work outside currently). I went out to measure the voltage to the door lock connectors quick though and there was no voltage at the BCM pins recommended in the instructions when I pressed the lock/unlock buttons, although I got voltage at a different harness on the BCM when I did that. Does the EVO tell the canbus to lock the doors or does it actually give a 12V pulse to the lock actuators on those pins?

Unfortunately though one of the female pin connectors supplied with the T-harness broke. Are you able to tell me what the specs are on it or if I can purchase a couple feet of the right color wire with connectors crimped on? I'd be willing to purchase a few since the wiring supplied with the harness isn't long enough to reach the BCM anyway.  I'm comfortable crimping my own new ones if I have to. Thanks!
So I haven't had a chance to reset the unit yet but I went and measure the door pin wire at the BCM and the harness. The EVO shows 0V to ground, the BCM shows 0V with the door open and about 8V with it closed, which I thought was a little odd since it's supposed to be closer to 12V but I suppose i'll just go with it.
So I reset the unit but I wasn't able to reconnect the door pin wire since the little crimp connector for the BCM broke. I still can't lock or unlock the doors using the telematics though. No sure what else I need to change for that.

Those crimps will be hard to find so you may have to do what everyone with no t-harness does, which is poke the wire through the connector.

For the lock and unlock not functioning, you need to first test the outputs (Green and White) on the evo to see if they are actually pulsing a ground trigger when trying from the SmartStart.

pulsing ground on either purple (lock) or purple/white (unlock) inputs of the EVO would also lock and unlock the car if the lock and unlock outputs (green and white wires) are connected to the right spot.

The pin locations should be where the tags 104 and 106 are below.

I found the crimps and the crimping tool. Actually wasn't difficult to find because i've had to use them for work-related applications so I knew what to look for. I measured directly from the terminal connector for the size.

It's raining here this week (i have to do everything outside)  but next weekend i'll go out with a DVM and measure what the EVO puts out but here's the thing, I did a little experiment and I have the lock wire going to the location in the BCM connector you showed above and I have the unlock wire going to another connector on the BCM that directly goes to the door actuator unlock signal. Neither creates a response when I try to lock or unlock the doors using the telematics. I hear relays click on the EVO but that's all I get.

Additionally, I'm still experiencing problems where the car occasionally shuts down when I open the car door. The door pin is not hooked up, as I mentioned, so is there any known issue with this?

Lastly, because i'm a fool and my gas gauge is broken I ran out of gas last night. The car kept trying to autostart though after I shut it off and I couldn't stop it. Does anyone know why that would happen? Not that I expect to do that twice but i'm just curious.

Thanks!

If the evo does not see an unlock signal (blue led will flash 2 times), it will shut down the car as soon as the door is open. The door pin connection has nothing to do with this. Takeover is also not available if the door was already open when it was remote started.

Leaving your foot on the brake normally cancels the remote start sequence but in push-to-start vehicles we need to ignore the brake press until the car is actually remote started since the whole remote sequence involves actually pressing the brake to start the car. You should be able to cancel the sequence though via the oem remote if the evo detects it (blue led flash). If you want, the dark blue wire of the pin will cancel the remote start sequence once ground is present on that input. Wire up a regular toggle switch to that input and the sequence would cancel.

Thanks Robert. I'll wire up the valet signal. Now as for the car shutting off when the door opens this is after i've opened it with the remote and I know the EVO sees the unlock signal. Maybe i'm doing something wrong though so i'll try again and see what happens.

Also I have a new issue, today the car started when I pressed lock twice but I need to see if this is repeatable.

Also I have a new issue, today the car started when I pressed lock twice but I need to see if this is repeatable.

See what happens if you lock it now, then lock it twice like 10 minutes later.

For the shut down issue. Instead of unlocking from a remote, grab the purple/white wire (unlock input) of the EVO 20-pin connector and jump it to ground for 1-second. This should also unlock your doors, so just open the door to see if the car stays running.

I still have to try the purple wire trick but I did have this happen to me a few more times. I open the door and the car dies. Really not sure why that would happen randomly. Any thoughts?

I did take a DVM and measure the EVO output when I was attempting to lock the doors using the telematics. The evo puts out a millivolt signal which i'm assuming is CANBUS signals but it doesn't lock the door when it's wired to the BCM pins.

Also, new issue, my rear defroster doesn't come on under 35 degrees like the website says, but I notice that now since i've installed the EVO i have to hit the defrost button twice to activate this. Is this part of the logic to let the evo turn it on?

Module didn't see the unlock signal. Which I will deem normal on this car since we have never listed this vehicle as being able to detect the oem remotes (even though this one seems to fine for starting). Make sure all doors are properly closed as it would affect the takeover procedure. Unlocking from the smartstart should always work and allow the vehicle to stay running when opening the door.

Which wires were you testing on the evo? The purple wires are inputs. The Green and White wires should be the ones outputing lock and unlock. Unlock typically requires a double pulse and should enable option B3 for that. Lock is a signal pulse.

As for the rear defrost. It is not an available feature on this vehicle. We cannot monitor nor enable this function.  https://fortin.ca/en/vehicles/infiniti/g35/2008-push-to-start/

Sorry for the delay, my work schedule has been quite busy. i'm using the green and white wires, as specified in the install instructions, but the evo just doesn't seem to be able to lock or unlock the car. I could have sworn I saw something that says the defroster works on this model but that's alright I suppose I misread.

I enabled the B3 option and didn't see any change but i'll poke around tomorrow when it's light out. Is there any listing that explains all the options available on the evo?

Here's a quick glance at options: http://fortin.ca/download/17363/16141.pdf

All feature descriptions can be found in the evo-all product page. Just click the icon of the feature you want to see and page will load with a brief description. http://fortin.ca/en/products/evo-series/evo-all/

Thanks! I probably should have looked for it earlier. I'll keep troubleshooting.
